10 Things I believe and Why They are Important

It’s been a while since I last posted and I’ve got no excuses for not doing so before now. The reality is that I’ve struggled to find inspiration these last few weeks. My training is going well and I’m getting very close to finishing my Certificate 4 in personal training. My gym plans have faced significant roadblocks and it is now most likely I will be opening in Q4, 2024. Anyway, these are not reasons for the distance between posts. Instead, my rhythm has been disrupted. Partly this has been due to finding space to ask some big questions.
The one that has been on my most right now is what do I believe?
I have written that I believe exercise and nutrition are foundations on which a good life is built and that thinking about how we live and what we leave behind are fundamentally important as well. These, as far as I am concerned, are good things to believe in. But, on reflection, I’ve been asking myself, but what about beyond these- or what doe these actually translate into?

So, I’ve set out on a little journey to find the 10 things I believe. I believe these things to my core.
1. Everyone in the world has fundamental political, economic and social rights. We are all equal.
2. If we are all equal then we all deserve some level of economic equality. Not completely, but we should all be much, much more equal than we are today.
3. Body and mind are interdependent. In other words, I do not believe in the separation of the body and the mind. Nourish both to live well.
4. All creatures big and small should be treated with kindness.
5. The earth is a gift that we must cherish and once it is gone, we’re all gone too.
6. The more you give, the more you receive.
7. Nothing is more important than the people in your life, not social media, not watching your favourite TV show, football team, nothing is more important.
8. Don’t fear making mistakes. Fear not trying.
9. There is a greater power, I don’t know what it is but whatever it I, God, the universe, whatever, it connects us all and has a plan for each one of us. Finding that thing, that plan, and making it your purpose is really the meaning of life.
10. You are the sum of your words and deeds.
Are they in order. I’m not sure they are or that they need to be. The first list I compiled was a bit longer, but in the end, I decided to reduce it to my top 10. The exercise of figuring out my top 10 was very useful indeed. Maybe, reducing it to 7 or 5 or my top 3 would also produce some deep reflection and an interesting internal dialogue about what it is that I most passionately believe.
After doing this exercise, I would recommend that everyone should give it a go. If nothing else, it is a way to reconnect with what you believe is important. I have been reminded, in the process of thinking this through, how I view the world and myself in it.
Next, I’m going to work on number 9. It’s also a big question- maybe the biggest we have to answer for ourselves. I'll post again soon. Until then, Be Herculean.
